To understand the origin of the name Wandering Stag you have to know the definition of both words as well as the meaning of my last name which is Hart. Wandering is something most people know the definition of so I'm not going to explain it. Stag means male deer but the other definition I am going to use for stag is a man who attends social gatherings alone.
The reason for using wandering is because I tend to wander around events in an irregular course because as I see things I want to photograph I will change direction or casually walk around looking for things to photograph. I also like traveling and just going for drives without really having a destination. Because of these reasons, wandering is a good fit for me.
The reason for using stag is to pay homage to my last name as well as to my ethnic origins and where I was brought up. Ethnically I am mostly Russian-German and Hart in the German region means stag. I was brought up in Montana and often saw deer because I lived in the country. Deer season was a major event when I was growing up sometimes to the point of over half the school being out on opening day. While I have never been deer hunting myself I have butchered several and a lot of people in my family use deer for food and to make things out of. They also happen to be quite tasty and fascinating animals. I am also using stag because I tend to attend social gatherings (parties/events/etc) alone, especially when I am going there specifically to photograph them.
So when you put wandering and stag together you get Wandering Stag.
